OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

Through an award from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), two schools located on opposite sides of the country will participate in a unique video conference opportunity early in 2008.

The two participating locations are One Stop Richmond Hill Community After School Program, Richmond Hill, Queens County, New York (lead teacher Neme Alperstein) and Vallley Christian Elementary, Bellflower, Los Angeles County, CA (lead teacher Pamela Leestma). A support team from each site will assist event locations in achieving a successful event.

The Teaching From Space program allows the International Space Station (ISS) crew members to perform curriculum-based activities in space to demonstrate basic principles of science, math, engineering and geography and answer questions real-time from students on Earth.

Teaching From Space also provides students and educators with the opportunity to learn about science and the ISS by speaking to the crew during orbit. Prior to the event, students study the ISS and onboard science activities and develop questions to ask the crew.

Live in-flight education downlinks, which have one-way video (from ISS) and two-way audio, are broadcast live on NASA Television.

This project will be a first-time ever event that includes two schools in a simultaneous downlink with the ISS, as well as a videoconference connection between the two participating schools and NASA's Digital Learning Network.
