The Pantanal

The Pantanal

Campo Grande

Before you go to Brazil it is important to know some things about the area you are visiting. To do this, go to the CIA Factbook at: http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/br.html

1. What is the capital of Brazil?

2. You will be flying into Sao Paulo and picking up a connecting flight to Campo Grande. The southern edge of the Pantanal is just north of this city. What two countries lie to the west of the Pantanal?

3. What is the main river in this area of Brazil?

4. What are the main environmental issues facing Brazil today?

5. It would be helpful to know how to speak a few important words and phrases when you get to Brazil. You don’t have the time to enroll in a Berlitz Language course. In order to pick up a phrase book to practice with you must find out what they speak. What is the official language of Brazil?

Before you leave you also need to find out the entry requirements for Brazil. Go to the U.S. Department of State’s web site to find the answer. http://travel.state.gov/

6. What are the only two entry requirements for Brazil?

You will have to convert your American dollars once you arrive in Brazil. Go to the following web site:http://channels.netscape.com/ns/pf/calculators.jsp

7. What is the currency of Brazil? What is the current exchange rate (What is 1 U.S. Dollar worth?) You are bringing $500 in U.S. cash with you. What will you get in return?

Your hotel room at the Bristol Excelor Plaza Hotel is $100 Brazilian dollars. How much is that?

8. You also plan to make phone calls back to California once you return. What is the time difference between the Pantanal and Los Angeles, CA? Between the Pantanal and Maine? To find out, go to the following web site, select Brazil - Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil from the menu in the left column: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ -- make sure you change the location in order to get an accurate answer.

9. Working in the field is tough so it is important to be prepared. In order to help figure out what to bring you should also find out what the current weather is like. Go to http://cnn.com/WEATHER/ , type in Campo Grande in the search box and click on Go. Check out the current conditions in Campo Grande. What is the current temperature? What about the humidity levels? Is there a five day forecast?

10. You never know what could happen or what will you need. The only MAIN thing to know is, you have a weight limit for your luggage. YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED 40 lbs. OF LUGGAGE TOTAL. Make a list of all the things you will need to bring with you. What kind of clothes would you bring? Equipment? Keep in mind your weight limit or you will not be allowed to get on the small plane to get to you final destination.

Answer each question.

Send your answers to the teacher, directions will be provided in class. Be sure to type out your answers on a WORD document first, just in case your message becomes erased. You can copy it from there right into the email and send directly to your email to send.
